Beyond the Scale: Why the InBody Scan is your Secret Weapon for Longevity

If you have spent any time focusing on your fitness and wellness, you likely have a complicated relationship with the traditional bathroom scale. We’ve all been there - you’ve been consistent with your workouts and your nutrition, you have noticed that your clothes are fitting better, you have more energy. But then you step on the scale and the number hasn’t budged. That moment can feel frustrating and demoralizing.

But here is what we really want you to remember: the scale only tells a very small part of the story.

Here at Studio in the Heights, we strive to change the narrative. We believe health is about vitality and longevity, not just gravity. That’s why we invested in the InBody Scan - a medical-grade piece of technology that is rare to find in a boutique Studio setting, and a total game-changer for anyone serious about their long-term health.

What Is the InBody Scan?

The InBody is a non-invasive Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) device. While that sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, the process is simple: you stand on the device and hold two hand sensors. It sends a very low-level electrical current through your body.

Because muscle, fat, and water all have different levels of "impedance" (resistance to that current), the machine can calculate exactly what your body is made of. It doesn't just give you one big number; it provides a segmental lean analysis, meaning it looks at each arm, each leg, and your torso individually.

Why This Is a Big Deal for Your Health

The number most people track to measure health and “weight loss” is the one on the scale. But what we really should be talking about is overall body composition. For example, two people could both weigh exactly 160 pounds, but one may have high muscle mass and love visceral fat, while the other may be struggling with sarcopenic obesity (often called “skinny fat”) where low muscle mass is masked by “normal weight.”

By understanding your InBody numbers, you get a clear picture of:

  • Skeletal Muscle Mass: Are you actually building the muscle you need to protect your bones and boost your metabolism?

  • Visceral Fat: This is the fat that surrounds your internal organs. It is a key indicator of chronic disease risk, including type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

  • Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): Knowing exactly how many calories your body burns at rest allows us to tailor your nutrition with precision.

  • ECW/TBW Analysis: This measures your extracellular water ratio, which can be a vital sign of internal inflammation or overtraining.

The 20/30 Challenge: Data Meets Determination

Knowledge is power, but only when you use it to take action. That’s why May is the perfect time to get your baseline scan, because our 20/30 Challenge is right around the corner!

The 20/30 Challenge is our community-wide commitment to completing 20 workouts and practicing 20 healthy habits over the course of 30 days. It’s about building the habits that lead to a vibrant, healthy life.

Here’s the really important bit: the scale might not give you a true reflection of the work you do during those 30 days. If you lose two pounds of fat but gain two pounds of muscle, the scale will tell you “nothing happened.” The InBody will show you that you have begun the process of transforming your health.

Taking a scan at the beginning and end of the 20/30 Challenge allows you to see tangible, data-backed progress. It turns “I think I am feeling better” into “I know my muscle mass increased by 1.5%.” That kind of insight is the ultimate motivation to keep going. Plus, monthly Members get a discount.

No Pressure, Just Insight

We know that for many, looking at “the number” can feel vulnerable and stressful. But if you have any familiarity with the Studio at all, you know that we are absolutely not here to judge you. We just want to give you the information you need to look and feel your best to live a long, full life.

Whether you are navigating perimenopause, starting a round of GLP-1s, training towards a specific goal, or simply want to ensure you can stay independent as you age, you deserve to know what’s happening under the hood. Armed with this data, our coaches can help you adjust your SPT sessions or nutrition habits to be as effective as possible.
