A Message of Resilience from Coach Lisa

As February draws to a close, I'm reminded of two significant aspects of this month that have deeply shaped my journey: Black History Month, celebrating achievements and resilience, and National Heart Month, highlighting the importance of heart health.

For me, these two themes intertwine in a powerful narrative of personal triumph and transformation. In 2010, at the age of 49, I made history as the first African American woman to compete in the grueling Race Across America. It was the pinnacle of my athletic career, a testament to dedication and perseverance.

However, just five years later, my life took an unexpected turn when I discovered I was born with a heart defect. The diagnosis was a stark reminder of the fragility of life, and I underwent open-heart surgery to address it. The journey to recovery was arduous, challenging every aspect of my being. As a fitness professional accustomed to pushing boundaries, being forced to slow down was a humbling experience.

Yet, through the trials and tribulations of post-surgery recovery, I gained invaluable insights that have profoundly influenced my approach as a health coach. I learned firsthand the importance of patience, resilience, and celebrating small victories on the path to wellness.

My experience with heart surgery has made me more empathetic and understanding of the struggles faced by my clients, particularly those over 50 who may feel discouraged or believe it's too late to prioritize their health. I've walked in their shoes, felt their frustrations, and witnessed their triumphs.

As a result, I've tailored my coaching programs to inspire others to prioritize their health and never give up, no matter the setbacks they may face. I encourage my clients to embrace the journey, to celebrate every milestone, no matter how small, and to never underestimate their own strength and resilience.

Today marks the 9-year anniversary of my induction into the Zipper Club, a testament to my resilience and the unwavering support of my community. It's a reminder to all of us to prioritize our health, to schedule that doctor's appointment, to sign up for that fitness class, and to never take a single thing for granted.

So, to anyone who may be facing their own health challenges or setbacks, I say this: it's never too late to take control of your health and well-being. With determination, support, and a willingness to embrace the journey, anything is possible.

With gratitude and resilience,
Lisa
