Benefits of Superfoods

We’ve had food on our minds this week as we wrap up our first ever Eat Clean program! Our participants are loving the program, and in the coming weeks we’ll have some testimonials to share with you. Meanwhile, we want to share some tips for superfoods you can add to your diet.

A superfood is a food that is nutritionally dense, containing lots of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Start adding these Superfoods to your diet and see what benefits you receive!

1. Avocado: Full of fat and fiber, avocados will give you lots of fat-fueled energy by providing your brain with monounsaturated fats (that's the good kind!).

2. Maca: Maca is native to the Andes of Peru, and is a well known adapatagen (or natural substance that helps the body adapt to stressors). Typically found in a powder or liquid form, it can be used to naturally boost libido and balance hormone levels.

3. Wheatgrass: Wheatgrass provides vital alkalizing benefits for the body by increasing absorption of nutrients like vitamin C and vitamin E. The best way to consume wheatgrass is in its most natural form - either blending the grass or using a powder.

4. Cinnamon: Cinnamon is packed with a variety of antioxidants that slow the aging process. Cinnamon can also be used as a sweetener alternative to help curb those sweet cravings!

5. Goji Berries: Often known as a "wolf berry", this fruit has been used for centuries as an energy booster. With 140 percent of your daily value of vitamin A and 163 percent of vitamin C, these beauties will help you fight that nasty cold.

6. Spirulina: This algae contains phycocyanin, a pigment that has been found to have antihypertensive effects, meaning it can help lower blood pressure. It is also an amazing source of plant-based protein, with a whopping 39 grams of protein in one ounce!

7. Turmeric: The cucurmin in turmeric is known for it's anti-inflammatory properties, but has also been proven to help aid in depression. A study by Phytotherapy Research provided the first clinical evidence that curcumin may be used as an effective and safe therapy for treatment in patients with mild depression.

8. Cacao Nibs: Organic, raw cacao is a superfood that contains high amounts of sulfur, magnesium and phenylethylamine. These units increase focus and alertness, while also keeping you in a great mood. Cacao nibs have more antioxidant activity than tea, wine, blueberries, and even goji berries! Bring on the cacao!

9. Holy Basil: This tea or leaf kills bacteria and infections, so it's a great natural remedy for acne. Holy basil is believed to benefit the skin and help treat skin infections.

10. Lion's Mane Mushroom: A 2012 study conducted in Malaysia found that consuming lion's mane mushroom could actually regenerate damaged cells from nerve injury. This can enhance both brain function and mental alertness.
